The idea of creating an institutional framework for academic contacts to the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was already in place in 1957, but it took almost 30 years, until Freie Universität Berlin and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem concluded an official partnership agreement in 1986.

In the meantime, the two universities are cooperating within a strategic partnership, which includes numerous joint research projects in the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences as well as student exchange. This partnership was taken to a new level in 2011, when both universities signed an agreement for strategic cooperation. This agreement has since served as a role model for the development of further strategic partnerships of Freie Universität.

More than 60 scholars from all the university departments are actively collaborating with colleagues in Jerusalem in both research and teaching. During the past three years workshops and symposia have been held in the fields of history, ancient Near Eastern studies, biology, physics, Islamic studies, Jewish studies, and political science. Special emphasis is placed on collaboration in the promotion of junior scholars. The partnership has been developed systematically. It currently includes:

  • joint calls for funding
  • joint calls for fellowships for postdoctoral researchers
  • agreement for joint doctoral program
  • representative of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in the Internationalen Council of Freie Universität Berlin
  • staff exchange for administrative staff
