In 2016, the Berlin Senate and the House of Representatives adopted regulations and guidelines on the subject of divestment. As a result, shares of the state of Berlin will be invested in the future on the basis of ethical and sustainable criteria. Investments in fossil and other companies that run counter to sustainability are to be withdrawn. Although the state's regulations are not binding on universities as independent corporations, Freie Universität Berlin has committed to applying the divestment regulations in 2019 as well. The divestment regulations based on ethical and sustainable criteria have since been part of Freie Universität Berlin's official policy.
