In 2008, the first photovoltaic system was installed on the physics building; by 2011, eight more systems had been installed. The nine photovoltaic systems have a total capacity of 675 kilowatts. This is equivalent to an annual production volume of about 600,000 kWh of renewable electricity, much of which is put directly into the university’s power supply and is enough to meet the annual electricity needs of, for example, the Department of Political and Social Sciences or 150 four-person households.

Usually, these systems are built and operated by external investors from the solar power industry. The university leases the roof area and buys the solar power that is produced. The student project UniSolar is also worth mentioning, through which a solar energy system was initiated and financed by students.
