Organic waste

>>> Residual waste or organic waste bin or compost - depending on availability

Since currently only very few properties of Freie Universität are equipped with bio garbage cans by the Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR), in many cases unfortunately the only option is to dispose of the bio waste in the residual waste bins.

However, if there is a bio garbage can or even a compost pile on your property, the following bio waste can be recycled there:

  • Fruit peels, fruit residues (if you have your own compost heap, it is better to do without citrus fruits and banana peels).
  • coffee grounds, coffee filters
  • loose tea, tea bags (except tea bags made of plastic fabric)
  • vegetable peels, vegetable scraps
  • food scraps, also cooked (but better not in garden compost heaps to avoid attracting animals)
  • Egg shells
  • Plants (without pot) and flowers (bouquets)

ATTENTION: NOT SUITABLE FOR COMPOSTING, either for recycling or hygiene reasons, are the following wastes:

  • raw meat
  • plastic bags, not even the plastic bags declared as biodegradable, because this degradation process is much slower than the industrial compost production at the Berliner Stadtreinigung. Also, these degradable plastic bags are indistinguishable from other plastic bags during industrial pre-cleaning and are automatically sorted out.

TIP:

For all those who want to become active themselves and make good compost out of their organic waste. Perhaps you can find a suitable corner in your area to set up a worm bin. For more details, see for example:
