The University Days Sustainability + Climate Protection provide a week-long opportunity to experience various facets of sustainability—whether they be clothing swaps, food sharing, upcycling workshops or the bicycle repair café. These events raise awareness for global and societal questions around sustainability and show possible solutions in everyday life. The University Days draw 1,000-1,500 participants each year. They are among the main activities of the SUSTAIN IT! Initiative and are always held during the summer semester.

Schools@University for Sustainability + Climate Protection is an education format for 5th and 6th graders. The project organizes around 80 hands-on workshops at six on-campus sites, transforming lecture halls, the Weather Station, and the Botanic Garden into interactive labs and creative workspaces. The program also offers half-day training sessions for teachers making sustainable development part of the teaching and learning culture, promoting cooperation between schools, the university, and extracurricular learning places in Berlin, and initiating change in schools. Around 3,000 students with 300 teachers from about 100 schools participate in Schools@University every year.

In the project UniGardening@SUSTAIN IT!, students from various disciplines and universities, employees from Freie Universität Berlin, and interested citizens have been coming together to cultivate a 500 m2 community garden since 2013. They have created an interactive Urban Gardening learning and meeting place.

NatLab is a participatory and experimental laboratory in the Department of Biology, Chemistry, and Pharmacy that allows pupils to experience the natural sciences through their own experimentation. Sustainability themes and the ESD concept play an increasingly important role in the varied courses on offer. The experiments developed by scientists are tailored to school curricula, so laboratory visits can also be integrated into lessons. NatLab also organizes regular training events for teachers.
