During the Berlin Long Night of the Sciences, Freie Universität Berlin presents the breadth of its research in a varied program that also appeals to children and teens. A large number of institutes and initiatives regulary participate in sustainability-related events, including SUSTAIN IT!, the Institut Futur, Schools@University, the Institute of Meteorology, and the Unit for Sustainability and Energy Management. The events include the FUture Slam – Science Meets the Future, a wide range of interactive science experiments, presentations on plant diversity, and guided tours that offer a behind-the-scenes look at energy use at Freie Universität Berlin. In 2017, the 100 participating facilities of Freie Universität Berlin registered more than 20,000 visits

With the Botanical Night the Botanic Garden and the Botanical Museum Berlin host a huge public event annually, which includes lit teaching trails, music, and art performances. Since 2013, the Botanic Garden has been home to UniGarden, where SUSTAIN IT! offers guided tours and activities as part of the Botanical Night. In cooperation with artists from sevengardens Berlin, dyeing workshops allow visitors to try their hand at the ancient cultural technique of coloring with plant substances.
