News from Jun 24, 2024

How do universities implement their social responsibility in sustainability? How do they contribute to sustainable development? The renowned journal "Times Higher Education" compares universities worldwide based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations in its Impact Ranking 2024. The latest ranking, whose results were published in mid-June, included a total of 2,152 universities globally, with 20 from Germany. Freie Universität Berlin, along with the University of Konstanz, ranked as the best German university in the overall standings (Rank 101-200).

The evaluation of Freie Universität Berlin is based on four of the nine submitted goals (SDGs 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16, and 17). Participation in the category "Partnerships for the Goals" (SDG 17) is mandatory for all universities wishing to receive an overall rating. Particularly notable is the university's placement in the "Gender Equality" category (SDG 5). In this category, the "Times Higher Education" Impact Ranking assesses, among other things, published research results related to sustainable development goals, access opportunities for female students, the proportion of female academics, and measures against discrimination of women and transgender individuals.

The President of Freie Universität Berlin, Prof. Dr. Günter M. Ziegler, expressed his satisfaction with the university's performance: "We are very proud of our excellent overall placement in a field of almost 2,000 participating universities worldwide. It reinforces our commitment to continuously pursue our sustainability activities. The 'Year of Biodiversity,' which we have declared for 2024 at the Freie Universität Berlin, provides a special impetus. Freie Universität Berlin is committed to its social responsibility to contribute to a sustainable future in all SDGs."

The First Vice-President of Freie Universität Berlin, Prof. Dr. Verena Blechinger-Talcott, emphasized: "The results of this increasingly recognized international ranking demonstrate that sustainability, good work, equality, and diversity are important aspects of our university culture. I am particularly pleased about our excellent placement in gender equality this year and the associated recognition of our commitment, such as the enactment of the Equal Opportunities Statute in April 2024 and the creation of numerous central and decentralized structures to promote gender equality at FU."

Andreas Wanke, Head of the Sustainability and Energy Office, sees the ranking results as a motivation for further activities to implement global sustainability goals. "Participation in the THE Impact Ranking creates regional and international visibility and facilitates global idea and experience exchange with other universities. This is invaluable at a time when climate protection and biodiversity need to be translated into concrete actions."

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 2015. The political objectives outlined therein are to be achieved by 2030 and apply to all countries.
