Philippe Descola

Philippe Descola initially specialized in the ethnology of Amazonia, focussing on the relations of native societies with their environment. Besides his field research with the Jivaroan Achuar to which he has devoted two monographs, he has published extensively on the ‘anthropology of nature’, a comparative approach of the relations between humans and non-humans. Lately, he has started working on the anthropology of images, non-Western and Western. He holds the chair of ‘anthropology of nature’ at the Collège de France and is also a professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris.
