Philipp Lepenies is the director of the Environmental Policy Research Centre (interim) and Visiting Professor of Comparative Politics at Freie Universität Berlin. Prior to this he was Visting Professor in the Department of Political and Social Sciences, Institute for Latin American Studies, Freie Universität Berlin.

From 2012 - 2015 he headed the department "Culture of Economics - Culture of Sustainability"at the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies IASS – Potsdam.

Lepenies’ work focuses on sustainable development, poverty inequality and social cohesion, poverty reduction, poverty surveys, political economy of statistics, indicators, national and international welfare surveys, development policy, experts and expertise in politics, institutional economy, small business and the informal sector.
