You can scan documents free of charge at all Freie Universität libraries.

We will be phasing out traditional printers and photocopiers from all university libraries from summer 2023 (you can find more information on how we are reorganizing our printing and copying services here).

Types of Scanners

There are various types of scanners available across Freie Universität libraries. You can find a detailed list of which scanners can be found at each location below.

book2net Book Scanners

  • These scanners are able to scan documents in DIN A3 format by default. At selected library locations (see table below), you can scan documents as large as DIN A2 format.
  • A USB stick is required to save any scans.
  • OCR text recognition (in PDF mode)
  • Resolution: up to 600 DPI
  • Color depth: black and white, color, grayscale
  • Supported formats for saved files: PDF (default), TIFF, JPEG

Microform scanners

  • These can be used to read microfiches and microfilms.
  • A USB stick is required to save any scans.
  • You can find more information on the Central Library and Philological Library websites.

Scan Tents

Scan tents enable users to digitize content simply and quickly using a scanning app of their choice. Simply place your smartphone on the platform at the top of the scan tent and lay the document you wish to scan (max. DIN A3 format) inside the tent.

ZEDAT Printing Service for University Members

Freie Universität members can print in black and white to DIN A4 format in the Law and Economics library computer lab with ZEDAT network printers. It is also possible to print in color and in different formats at ZEDAT’s computer labs (you can find more information in German on the ZEDAT website).

Returning your MensaCard

If you were exclusively using your MensaCard to pay for media reproduction services (photocopies, printing) in accordance with the old price model, you can return your card to any Mensa during its opening hours and have the credit remaining on the card (up to thirty euros) and your deposit (1.55 euros) paid out to you in cash. You can find more detailed information about returning your MensaCard here.
Otherwise, you can continue to use your MensaCard at any dining facility of StudierendenWerk Berlin.
