BaföG for studies abroad:

If your studies abroad are longer than 6 months, you can apply for “Auslands-BaföG”. A prerequisite is that the stay abroad is an integral part and needed for your studies in berlin. Please apply for this funding at least six months before the start of your exchange and at the office for the destination country .

Students that do not receive BaföG in Germany are also eligible for a grant. Please note that if you do receive Bafög in Germany, you are required to complete a new application for the funding once you return to Berlin.

 

DAAD

The DAAD awards scholarships to fully enrolled German students and are awarded on the basis of professional qualifications and personal aptitude. The amount of scholarships vary by program and host country. Further information can be found on the pages of the DAAD.

“Begabtenförderungswerk”

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research supports twelve organizations that support gifted students and PhD candidates. The support takes the form of monthly scholarships, grants, language courses, seminars or language courses. More information can be found here.

Student loans:

German students, and in some cases, foreign stdents under the age of 30 can ask for a loan at various financial institutions, including the “Förderbank der Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau”- information can be found here.

Studies loan:

German students (and in some cases foreign students) under the age of 36 who have completed the 4 semester of their Bachelor’s degree or are enrolled in a Master’s program can apply for a study loan. More information can be found here.

 

Yes, if you go abroad for at least four months (an exception can be made for three months, provided that you have a justified reason) of the respective semester. You can apply for exemption and reimbursement in the semester ticket office of the AstA. More information can be found here.

No, receiving an exchange place guarantees you the financial support. In other words, if you have been accepted to go abroad, you will receive the mobility grant from the FU.

To continue being enrolled at the FU, you are required to re-register and pay the semester fees. You can, however, apply for a Leave of Absence at the student administration. The “Sozialbeitrag” for the Studierendenwerk will be reimbursed to you (54€). The reimbursement of semester ticket fees is possible. For further information, please click here.

Studying abroad generally incurs additionally costs compared to the cost of living in your home country. The Erasmus mobility grant is designed to cover a part of these additional costs. Financial support varies depending on the different living costs in the program countries.

The European Commission divides the program countries into three groups. The DAAD determines three monthly funding groups:

The funding period of the Erasmus+ grant corresponds to the length of stay at the host university. The grant is comprised of two parts: a financial support and a zero-grant-funding. The amount of monthly installments and the duration of the financial support or zero-grant-funding is redefined for each academic year.

In the academic year 2018/19, zero-grant-funding is 5 days, which means that 5 days of the study period at the host university are not funded. The amount of zero-grant-funding for the upcoming academic year will be determined in July 2019.

Yes, all participants in the Erasmus program receive financial support. Please note that you cannot receive simultaneous funding for both an Erasmus+ semester abroad and an Erasmus+ internship, if this should be the case for you. In general, participants of the Erasmus+ program cannot benefit from further EU funding at the same time.

Yes. Single-parents who take their child/children with on their exchange semester receive a flat rate of 200€/month in addition to the grant for the respective country group. Please inform us if you are applicable for this extra grant.

The grant is usually paid in two installments. Within the first weeks of the exchange period, Erasmus students receive approx. 70-80% of the estimated total grant. The remaining amount is paid after the required documents (confirmations, Learning Agreements, certificates, etc.) have been handed in.
