Preparation of the internship abroad

  • The Career Service of the FU Berlin has published a collection of selected  internships and offers a lot of helpful information about internships abroad

  • Many departments have a blackboard, where sometimes internship positions can be found. Also ask your professors or fellow students if they can recommend internship sites. Also the ABV coordinators/internship officers of the departments can sometimes help.

  • Use popular search engines to look for internship positions abroad. Many institutions/companies/universities do not offer internships directly, but are open to unsolicited applications.

  • Take a look at the internship reports of other students on our blog and get ideas. There you will also find helpful tips on finding an apartment, for example.

Host institutions could be any institutions established in a program country, active in the labor market or in the fields of education, training or youth. Should you wish to complete an internship at a higher education institution, it must hold a valid Erasmus University Charter (ECHE).

The following institutions are not eligible as hosting institutions for internships:

◾EU institutions and other EU institutions including specialized agencies (see https://europa.eu/european-union/contact/institutions-bodies_de).

◾Institutions managing EU programs (e.g., National Agencies) to avoid conflicts of interest or double funding.

Research internships at universities are possible. Prerequisite: no enrollment at the university!

No insurance coverage is associated with an Erasmus+ mobility grant. Since the grant provider (neither the EU Commission nor the DAAD Bonn or Freie Universität Berlin) is not liable for damages resulting from illness, death, accident, injury to persons, loss of or damage to property in connection with the Erasmus+ stay abroad in case of insufficient insurance, it is very important that you provide sufficient insurance coverage yourself.

You should take out the following insurances for the duration of your stay abroad:

  •     International health insurance with repatriation (also in case of death and pandemic)
  •     Accident insurance with protection abroad
  •     Liability insurance with protection abroad

Please ensure that you have sufficient insurance cover in good time before starting your internship abroad and in particular enquire (preferably in writing) with your insurance company about what needs to be taken into account with regard to the current situation surrounding COVID-19.

For all participants in the Erasmus+ program (including graduates/graduates) there is the possibility to be included in the group insurance of the DAAD, which offers comprehensive insurance coverage. For more information, please visit www.daad.de/versicherung.

European Health Insurance Card

Your national health insurance (European Health Insurance Card) generally also provides basic insurance coverage for your stay in another EU country. The free card gives access to medically necessary public health services in EU countries, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway, under the same conditions and costs that apply to citizens of that country. However, the coverage provided by the European Health Insurance Card or private insurance may be insufficient - especially if repatriation or special medical procedures are necessary. For such cases, it may make sense to take out supplementary (private) insurance.

The benefits of a statutory health insurance usually do not apply in non-European countries. Students who are insured with a private health insurance company should ask their insurance company in detail whether and to what extent insurance coverage is guaranteed abroad, or whether supplementary insurance must be taken out.

Since in both cases the scope of covered services is often insufficient, it is recommended to take out additional health insurance abroad. This recommendation applies all the more to countries with which no intergovernmental social security agreement exists.

Attention: Inexpensive travel insurances (usually less than 20 € per year) are valid for one calendar year, but only cover the first weeks of the stay abroad. Thus, they do not provide sufficient insurance coverage for an internship abroad!

EU legislation regarding health insurance in the EU (European regulation of compulsory contributions in the country of employment): Under certain circumstances, Síe must take out health insurance in the host country/internship country. This applies in particular to students who are legally insured as students in Germany and who complete a voluntary internship in the destination country and receive a monthly salary for this. The conditions of insurance coverage during the internship period must be clarified in advance with the insurance offices in the home and, if applicable, host country.

Accident/liability insurance

Upon enrollment, students of Freie Universität Berlin are automatically and free of charge insured against accidents and business liability in Germany. This insurance coverage does not apply abroad! If you are not or not sufficiently insured through your internship site, please take care of an additional insurance.

Semester language courses at the Language Center of Freie Universität Berlin.

Erasmus students are not required to apply for a semester of leave. Nevertheless, it is often used because the semester of leave is counted as a university semester but not as a subject semester and therefore no study time is "lost". You apply for the leave of absence at the Student Administration Office.

You can find more information about the semester of leave here.

If you are abroad for more than four months or are on leave of absence, you can apply for a refund of the fee at the Semesterticket office of the AStA.
