Short term study periods abroad
Lengthy study periods abroad are not a consideration for certain students owing to various reasons. This could be due to the inability to take a long break from a student job due to financial concerns, due to family committments such as children or other dependents, a student not being able to leave their native country for long periods for health reasons.
Your Options
Shorter alternatives to a semester abroad as well as additional funding for certain groups are possible within various exchange programmes.
A PROMOS scholarship can also be granted for short stays abroad
The minimum time period that must be met for a PROMOS scholarship to be awarded are as follows:
- Study period abroad: minimum 1 month
- Research conducted abroad in preparation of a thesis: minimum 1 month
- Internship: minimum 1 month
- Language course: minimum 3 weeks
- Academic course: minimum 5 days
A scholarship for a research trip, research conducted in archives abroad and field research abroad can be applied for in the category of study period abroad. An agreement or connection with a university is not necessary in these cases. Summer schools fall in the category of academic courses and can therefore also be funded. Keep in mind that the PROMOS course fee grant for academic and langauge courses (when applicable) is set at 500€. The actual costs of such courses can be much higher than 500€.
Erasmus+ funding for participants with fewer opportunities
The Erasmus+ programme offens the following groups additional grants (top-up "fewer opportunities") of 250€ per month to facilitate the implementation of an Erasmus+ study period or internship abroad.
- employed students
- students who have children
- students with a disability with a degree of 20 or more
- students with a chronic illness
- students who are from a non-academic home ("Erstakademiker*innen")
If more than one of these cases applies to an applicant, the additional funding of 250€ will only be granted once. It is not possible to combine multiple groups.
Erasmus+ periods abroad can be funded from a minimum of 2 months.
