In the research-oriented Master's program, students should learn to work independently and in a project-based manner on problems and issues of gender studies, and to develop solution concepts which are guided by theory, precise methods and reflected in scientific theory. The unique feature of the Master's program is its disciplinary positioning in the field of gender studies within political science on the one hand and the interdisciplinary and transregional deepening of knowledge on the other. In addition, methodological competencies will be expanded upon.
The Master's program provides a sound knowledge of the complexity of the category gender with regard to the interaction with other difference categories such as race/ethnicity, social stratum, age or sexuality. In this context, special attention is also paid to the historical, socio-economic, cultural and political preconditions as well as the regional specifics of gender structures and complex social inequalities. The focus is on the goal of enabling students to intersectionally analyze political processes, interactions, structures and institutions in transnational contexts.
The Master's program Gender, Intersectionality and Politics benefits from its disciplinary location at the Otto Suhr Institute for Political Science, which is one of the largest political science institutes in Germany. The institute is distinguished by the diversity of its research foci and its research strength. The research foci and research networks at the institute enable a link between research and teaching.
These include the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network "Well-being, Ecology, Gender and community" (WEGO) and the Cluster of Excellence "Contestations of the Liberal Script".
A special advantage of the location is the possibility to focus on regional studies with the offers of the Center for Politics in the Maghreb, Mashreq and Gulf, the Institute for Latin American Studies, the Institute for Eastern European Studies as well as in the field of East Asian Studies.
In addition, students of the Master's program Gender, Intersectionality and Politics at the Otto Suhr Institute of Freie Universität Berlin benefit from the proximity to political institutions, associations and organizations in the fields of gender and diversity politics, as well as to policy advisors and other academic institutions in Berlin.
The Master's program is in a modular format. It consists of a compulsory area with three modules in the field of gender studies within political science including a methods module, a compulsory elective area with a research-oriented project module, and an elective area, in which students can expand their competences either in an interdisciplinary module, a transregional module, within the internship module and/or in one or two language acquisition modules. Example study plans can be found here: Variant A and Variant B (in German).
The Master's program Gender, Intersectionality and Politics qualifies students for a scientific career and doctorate for research both within and outside a university setting. Furthermore, graduates of the master's degree can later work in other knowledge-based areas of politics. Future employers for graduates could be, for example: public administrations, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, policy advisors, management consultants, foundations, associations, adult education and political education institutions, media or publishing companies.
It is possible to carry out a six-week internship during your studies, which prepares you for your future career and offers the opportunity to apply and test the knowledge gained during your studies in practice.
