Accident reports
Students at higher education institutions in Berlin have statutory accident insurance through accident insurer Unfallkasse Berlin.
In case of an accident, Unfallkasse Berlin assumes the costs of medical treatment and rehabilitation.
This insurance is free of charge to students. Premiums are paid by the state of Berlin.
Accidents that occur in connection with attending the university (including traveling to and from the university) and have resulted in medical treatment must be reported by the university to the relevant accident insurer (Unfallkasse Berlin) immediately (within three days).
To ensure that we can report to the accident insurer on time, we need students to help.
Please report any accidents, either to your department administration or to unfallanzeige-studierende@zuv.fu-berlin.de, using the official Unfallkasse Berlin form.
Process
Report the accident by submitting the completed accident report to your department administration. From there, the report will be forwarded via the Occupational Safety Service to the secretarial staff of the Student Records and Registration Office, who will take care of transmitting the completed report to Unfallkasse Berlin.
If the accident was not reported immediately
- The university is contacted directly by the accident insurer. Unfallkasse Berlin is required to review the matter from the standpoint of insurance law and to obtain the completed accident report form after the fact.
- In this case, the secretarial staff of the Student Records and Registration Office will contact the student and ask him/her to fill out an accident report sent as an e-mail attachment with as much precise detail as possible (important: if at all possible, provide the address of the place where the accident occurred and additional details, such as the event or course and context) and return it, either as a PDF attached to an e-mail or by mail. The time limit for this is two weeks.
In this context, we would like to point out individual students’ obligations of cooperation. Only the person who has suffered the accident himself or herself can provide the information regarding the chain of events surrounding the accident that the accident insurer needs in order to review the matter successfully.
If the accident insurer is unable to perform a review because the student does not respond, it may refuse to assume the costs in the individual case for which a review is needed.
This would be greatly to the detriment of the person who has suffered the accident, since a treatment assumed by Unfallkasse Berlin generally serves to ensure that the insured party achieves a lasting recovery as soon as possible.

FAQ
There is a distinction that must be made here. If the internship did not take place within the scope of Freie Universität Berlin’s organizational responsibilities (for example, at an external business that offers internships), the student is covered through that institution and needs to file a report via that institution as well.
Reports are only filed through Freie Universität in these cases if the internship is also completed at one of the university’s institutions.
