The EU project GlycoSpec aims to investigate the reaction mechanism in glycosylation, which is crucial for building oligosaccharides. For this purpose, a detailed structural analysis of the sugar intermediate, the glycosyl cation, is required. The approach involves using a cryogenic helium droplet instrument to capture the intermediate in the gas phase. Subsequently, a laser irradiates the target ion, revealing its vibrational pattern. This mass spectrometry-based technology provides a snapshot of the SN1 mechanism. A series of chemical reactions are then conducted to correlate the gas-phase structure with the synthesis in solution.
Job description:
- Design and synthesis of sugar building blocks with diverse functional group modifications
- develop and execute chemical reactions to probe the glycosylation mechanism
- perform in-depth spectrometric analysis of oligosaccharides using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), mass spectrometry, and infrared spectroscopy (IR)
Requirements:
• Completed scientific degree (M.Sc. or Diploma) and completed doctorate in organic or carbohydrate chemistry
(Professional) Experience:
• Experience in carbohydrate chemistry
• experience in glycan synthesis
Desirable:
• Experience in the synthesis of oligosaccharides and mechanism studies in glycosylation reactions.
• proficient in written and spoken English.
We look forward to receiving your application, which should include the following documents:
• a one-page letter of motivation why you want to work in EU project GlycoSpec, together with details of previous research experience and future goals
• your CV (including a list of publications if applicable)
• evidence of your academic achievements including copies of your Bachelor's, Master's and PhD degrees
• at least two letters of support
