The Institute for Islamic Studies at Freie Universität Berlin focuses on Islamic and Middle Eastern history and Muslim societies and cultures with an emphasis on global interconnections and analogies to other temporal and spatial contexts. The institute specializes primarily in theories and methods from the disciplines of history, social studies, and cultural studies. The professorship “Islamic Studies (Classical Islam)” is particularly concerned with the intellectual, cultural, social, and religious history of the pre-modern Islamic world.

Job description:

Participation in teaching and research in the subject area of “Classical Islam,” administrative work at the institute, and assistance in the preparation of third-party funding applications. The position provides the holder with the opportunity to improve their level of academic qualification.

Requirements:

Completed university degree (MA level) in Islamic Studies or a closely related discipline.

Desirable:

-University degree in Islamic Studies or a closely related discipline with above-average results

-Very good knowledge of Classical Arabic and preferably knowledge of another language of the Islamic world

-Excellent PhD project on the premodern history of the Islamic world (ca. 7th–16th century CE). The holder of the professorship should serve as primary supervisor.

-Familiarity with historical questions and methods in Islamic Studies

-Good teamwork skills

-Very good knowledge of English (at a minimum equivalent to CEFR C1) and at least basic knowledge of German (equivalent to CEFR A2) or very good knowledge of German (at a minimum equivalent to CEFR C1) and at least basic knowledge of English (equivalent to CEFR A2). Applicants with the ability to teach in German will be preferred. Applicants without the language skills necessary to teach in German are required to demonstrate the attainment of these skills within two years of being hired.

-Willingness to participate in pedagogical training

-Willingness to become an affiliate member of the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies
