The Open and Secure Internet of Things group at Freie Universität Berlin, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, is directed by Prof. Emmanuel Baccelli and supported by Inria and Einstein Center for Digital Future. Main working areas are embedded IoT software, low-power network protocols, Internet Protocol standardization, and cybersecurity, among other related topics.

Job description:
In the context of the RIOT-rs and IoTPUSH projects, this position will focus on designing and leading the development of buidling blocks for a major open source embedded software platform written in Rust for heterogeneous low-power 32-bit MCUs (Arm Cortex-M, RISC-V, ESP32…) connected with various low-power wireless techniques (BLE, 802.15.4, LoRa…) and secure IPv6 6LoWPAN network stacks.

Responsibilities:
the recruited person will be responsible for core embedded OS development, for secure low-power network stack development, and for CI test infrastructure. This job is for people who are passionate about embedded Rust, serious cybersecurity and who are open source enthusiasts.

Collaboration:
The recruited person will be in connection with the RIOT-rs developers community, as well as collaborate with international partners (e.g. from Inria) in the domains of secure low-power IoT, cryptography and formal verification.

Main activities:
 • implementation, documentation and CI of embedded Rust modules and RIOT-rs
 • propose architectures of Rust rewrites for RIOT building blocks
 • interact with secure low-power IoT network protocols experts
 • upstreaming and steering of open source communities

Requirements:
Applicants must possess a master degree in computer science, mathematics, electrical engineering or similar Strong "hard" skills desired:
• embedded C/Rust
• git
• make / cargo / laze
• open source software workflows
• extensive RTOS or bare-metal experience on 32-bit microcontrollers such as ARM Cortex-M, RISC-V, ESP32

Desirable:
Strong “soft” skills desired:
• distributed team work
• excellent englich skills (written, spoken, read)
• consensus building
