At the Institute for Social and Cultural Anthropology of Freie Universität, the DFG research project "Aesthetic Citizenship: Formations of the Gendered Self and Imaginaries of Urban Modernity in China" (PI: Prof. Dr. Claudia Liebelt) started in September 2021.

This research project explores the relationship between bodily aesthetics and citizenship as a formation of the gendered self in the Himalayan region. The project's underlying concept of aesthetic citizenship links the transformational processes associated with the global expansion of the cosmetics and beauty industry with processes of subjectification, surveillance and disciplining.

Due to the premature departure of the project staff member, a research assistant is now being sought. The assistant will help to finalise the research project in its last year.

The post holder will support the project management in the publication of research results and conducts his/her own explorative ethnographic research. The preparation of a doctoral project with related content within the framework of the externally funded project is possible.
