WiSe 22/23: China's Relations in the Indo-Pacific Region

Many international experts and academics predicted that the Indo-Pacific region will become the fastest growing region in the world, having a crucial role in the development of the future world order. Thus, it comes with no surprise that the US, as well as the EU have recently launched strategic action plans to increase their presence in the region, in a bid to contrast China’s rise.
Although China currently does not have an organic Indo-Pacific strategy, it is undeniable that it has been seeking to strengthen its political and economic presence in the region through various means. Such steps include for example the increase of its military presence in the South China Sea, the promotion of closer economic ties with neighbouring countries, the diplomatic offensive to win over the pacific island countries through development aid.
The goal of this course is to gain a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics occurring in the Indo-Pacific region, and how China has been shaping relations with its countries in order to establish itself as the main economic and political power in the region. Furthermore, a special focus will be devoted to the academic debate in the field of regionalism by exploring its most important theories, which will lay the theoretical foundation for this course.
