WiSe 22/23: Organizations and Inequality

For a number of very different sociological theories of society, organizations are the structural hallmark of modern societies. Contemporary societies can therefore also be described as "organizational societies." Niklas Luhmann, for example, sees organizations as indispensable to modern society and calls for more attention to their peculiar decision-based logic. In James Coleman's social theory, corporate actors are the central counterparts of individuals, establishing a structural imbalance of power in the "asymmetric society." And for Charles Perrow we live in an organizational society because organizations have long since incorporated society. Those who want to use the concept of organizational society to point to a central distinguishing characteristic of modern societies must show how social processes or structures change their character when they either take place within formal organizations or are determined by organizations. From an inequality theoretical perspective, these are primarily processes of allocation and distribution of goods and positions. In recent years, a number of conceptual approaches have been developed to explain the role of organizations in the formation and reproduction of different forms of social inequalities. Empirical studies have also shown that the distribution of goods and positions in a society is determined to a large extent by the "logic of organizations".
In the first part of this seminar will discuss recent conceptual approaches on the role of organizations in the formation and reproduction of social inequalities. In the second part, empirical studies will be presented that show the importance of the organizational level - and here especially of work organizations and firms - for social inequalities in modern societies.
