WiSe 22/23: The political economy of the US-American welfare state: a comparative perspective

The aim of this course is to give students an overview of the political economy of welfare states - especially the US one - by introducing a theoretical and empirical comparative perspective. The course is divided into three blocks: The first provides a theoretical foundation on which the rest of the course builds. Theoretical perspectives on what a welfare state is and what it is trying to achieve are discussed, then focusing on theoretical perspectives from the field of comparative political economy. The second block focuses on empirical aspects of the US welfare state and compares it with other - mainly European - welfare state regimes. In the last block, an identity perspective on the American welfare state will be taken in order to analyse how one system has very different effects on different groups. Overall, the aim of the course is to provide a theoretically and empirically sound overview of the American welfare state, especially in comparison to its European counterparts. Schließen
