WiSe 22/23: PS-Introduction to Cultural Studies: Postcolonial Melancholia and Collective Amnesia in Contemporary British Culture

Kommentar

This course uses Paul Gilroy’s (2005) notion of ‘postcolonial melancholia’ to consider the various guises of Britain’s cultural reckoning with the loss of Empire. Spanning from the post-war period of the late-twentieth century, via the promise of the new millennium, up to the present day, we will explore how the nation’s amnesiac inability to remember, repent and reconcile its imperial past arises across a range of media. Examining an array of forms (from novels, films, TV shows, and critical theory, to music, podcasts, public ceremony and experimental radio) we will pay specific attention to how different modes of text, image and audio convey themes of national belonging, multicultural inclusivity and imperial nostalgia. In this way, analysing a host of Anglophilic phenomena – such as the mythic memory of the Second World War, the musical landscapes of 90s Britpop, and the recent death of Queen Elizabeth II – this course will investigate crucial dynamics surrounding Britain’s conflicted relationship to US-American ascendency, the state of the union (with Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales), and the future of the Royal Family. Consequently, probing the extent to which imperial logics of racial subjugation live on despite the diversity of modern Britain, we will pose the ultimate question of whether an exaggerated vision of cosmopolitan openness has actually served to perpetuate the erasure of the nation’s colonial crimes?
