WiSe 22/23: History of Capitalism in the Ottoman Empire

Almost everything about capitalism is hotly debated, except its dominating presence in our lives. Its origins, its modus operandi and its dissemination have long been popular topics of historical investigation. Historians of the Ottoman Empire have also engaged with these questions including that of how and when the empire became incorporated into capitalism. This course will investigate the myriad processes by which capitalism became an inescapable component and determinant of social and political life in the Ottoman Empire. We will start in the early modern period with an examination of the primary features of the imperial political economy. We will then focus on the major transformations that took place in Ottoman political institutions and revenue collection in the eighteenth century. We will then move on to what some scholars have called “the peripheralization” of the Ottoman empire in the world-economy in the nineteenth century with the establishment of a free-trade regime. Throughout the semester, we will foreground changes in and struggles over the exploitation of labor, land tenure, commercial agriculture, economic thought and trade. The course aims to explore some of the main facets of capitalist modernity in the Ottoman Empire and introduce and critically examine the main scholarly approaches in the historiography. Schließen
