We will examine the evolution of US-South Korea Relation from the late 19th century to nowadays. The class will focus on US policies toward the Korean Peninsula and Korea’s responses at the critical period in modern Korean history. The topics covers the normalization in 1882, the wartime conference during the World War 2, the division, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the US assistance and economic development, changes in the US policy toward North Korea in 1960s and 1970s, the Yusin system in 1970s, the intellectual property treaty in 1986, the Geneva Agreement in 1994, the Anti-America protest in South Korea, and the US-North Korea summit in 2018. Two main questions in this class is what Korea is to America and what America is to Korea. Each class compose of general overview, presentation, discussion, and Q & A session. Schließen
