p>“How political is music?” is perhaps one of the most frequently asked questions in musicological and journalistic literature. Thoughts on the powers of music are abundant. And several examples confirm how music and politics intersect at many levels. Among the most commonly mentioned examples are the role of music in the shaping of the identity of social movements (i.e., protest songs), or the valuable uses of music in fostering social equity (i.e. “El Sistema” in Venezuela). But if the intersection between music and politics seems to be a given, it is crucial to think music as a political act beyond its most obvious manifestations. In this sense, thinking music politically invites us first and foremost to reconsider what both music and politics are, as well as to rethink their function in society.
In this seminar, we will focus on a few case studies that are illustrative of the most common debates on the politics of music. As such debates capture so well the social and cultural imaginations of different historical periods, ultimately, this seminar aims at contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of how music has been the subject of constant negotiations between the aesthetic, the institutional, and the social. To get first-hand knowledge, we will also welcome some Berlin-based curators and musicians in our seminar; and visit spaces of artistic and cultural dissidence in the city.
