WiSe 22/23: Introduction to the methodology of modern literary studies with focus on gender studies

Bad news about academia: there is no way to circumvent the “Methodology”. Good news: it is not so scary as its name suggests! And, if you are interested in gender studies, you ought to orientate yourself according to those high names functioning as lighthouses in this field: Hegel, Lacan, de Beauvoir, Butler, etc. In this curse we try to order the “rule makers” and “rule breakers” in a narrative, using the tragedy “Antigone” of Sophocles as a canonical text, to which all these grate names refer in one or other way. This would be not the most comprehensive, but probably a more interesting approach to the not so tempting term “Methodology” in case of gender studies. We will try to implement gendering Methodologies in the Framework of Byzantine Studies. Each session of theoretical debate is followed by a text reading session and following discussions to proof the validity and viability of theories and texts in the realm of Byzantine studies. Teaching language would be adjusted to students’ preference. Being acquainted with philosophy is not the requirement, but the agenda. Syllabus: i. Meet and learn about ii. Antigone - Paradigm iii.
