WiSe 22/23: Religiosität in der 'Hauptstadt des Atheismus'

Despite its characterization as an irreligious city, Berlin has a rich history of religious conflict, innovation, and culture that are captured in the urban construct. This course aims to contribute to social science research on the extent to which religion intersects with other areas of public life by exploring the construction and evolution of sacred space in Berlin. In weekly sessions participants will analyze sacred spaces in Berlin taking an interdisciplinary socio-historical approach to answer “what social and historical processes create and shape sacred spaces” while considering "the role(s) these spaces play in shaping public life in the city.”
This course is best suited for students of anthropology, cultural studies, geography, history, urban studies, political science, sociology, and other disciplines by request.
