This course introduces us to feminist and queer struggles in the Global East - with a focus on Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The complexities of sex, sexuality, and gender as well as the debates and discourses around acceptable and transgressive sexualities and gender identities and how they were governed during Soviet Imperialism are addressed as a foundation. In addition, we review the Global East as a concept in relation to the Global West. Therefore, this course is suitable for students with and without prior knowledge in individual regions of Eastern Europe or Central Asia. This course, however, does not focus primarily on a historical review of the former Soviet Union. Rather, after the first classes, guest lectures from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Armenia, and Georgia present to us current feminist discussions and movements in their respective country. By teaching with two lectures and inviting guest lectures who are also activists from different field, this course takes an interdisciplinary and intersectional approach to examining colonial continuities of the former Soviet Union in the feminist and queer struggle in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Course Objectives: At the end of this course, students should be able to: 1. Explain and exemplify the relationship between the Global East and Global West 2. List, define, and summarize key conceptual and theoretical discussions on gender, sex, and sexuality during Soviet Imperialism in Eastern Europe and Central Asia 3. Compare, apply, and critique Socialist and Post-Socialist Feminism 4. Describe and explain current discussions and movements in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Armenia, and Georgia. Schließen
