SoSe 23: Words, concepts, and linguistic diversity in the brain

This seminar deals with how words and concepts are organized and processed in the mind/brain. We will adopt a perspective that looks at differences and similarities across languages, and will discuss questions such as: is there a cognitive/biological explanation for similarities across languages in the form of words and in the kinds of meaning they encode? How do cross-linguistic differences affect our concept representations? How are different semantic categories represented in the brain?
We will cover experimental research employing different techniques, including studies testing human subjects with behavioral and neuroimaging (EEG, fMRI) methods, and studies involving animals. The course is taught in English. Knowledge about the methods and assumptions of neurolinguistics/psycholinguistics research is required to successfully attend the course.
