SoSe 23: China-EU Relations
Silvia Paoli
Kommentar
This course aims at providing an overview of China-EU relations and the current challenges they are facing. It will explore the EU’s China foreign policy in the past decade until the recent shift from strategic partnership to systemic rivalry and its implications. Participants will gain an overview of the main European bodies and institutions involved in the crafting of the EU’s China policy. A special focus will be devoted to China-Germany relations, with a look at the debate on the much-awaited Germany’s new China policy.
China’s approach to relations with the EU will also be analysed: issues like China’s wolf-warrior diplomacy, cooperation with Eastern and Baltic European countries, China’s retaliation against the deepening of the EU-Taiwan relations will be covered.
Lastly, China-EU relations will also be framed in the international context, by analysing China’s BRI, the EU’s Indo-Pacific strategy, the interplay with China-US rivalry.
The analysis of these issues will be carried out with special attention to theories of political science and international relations, which will lay the theoretical background of this course.
