SoSe 23: The First World War in a Global Perspective

The public memory of the First World War continues to be shaped by the Western Front: by images of endless trenches, positional warfare, and the industrial and attritional Battles of the Somme and Verdun. The war is read as a kind of European civil war, mainly between Germany, France and Great Britain. For a long time, this was also the dominant perspective in academic history. Only recently in First World War Studies has more attention been paid to the global dimensions of the conflict: to non-European powers like Japan and the Ottoman Empire and semi-independent Dominions like Canada, Australia and South Africa; to theaters of war outside Europe (e.g., Africa or the Middle East); to colonial empires (e.g., colonial soldiers and workers; the emergence of anticolonial nationalism), to global economic warfare and, last but not least, to the consequences of the war on neutral and non-belligerent countries in the Global South (e.g., Latin America). The course will discuss these aspects while also assessing how far 1914-1918-online, the largest and most comprehensive encyclopedia of the First World War, takes them into account. Schließen
