“Active participation” requires, first, that the participants complete the reading for each session and participate in the discussion and group work and, second, that each students submits an “open research question” (motivated and justified on one page) during the semester. Research on school-to-work transitions (STWTs) has widely demonstrated that STWTs not only impact young people’s lives, but also strongly influence later career trajectories. Comparative research on STWTs has accumulated substantial body of knowledge on the relationship between skill systems and occupational attainment at labor-market entry, that is, on how institutional characteristics shape the relationship between education and labor allocation. However, this comparative research has focused almost exclusively on STWTs in advanced industrialized economies, while research on less advanced countries is still very sparse. However, STWTs in less advanced economies have specific challenges, for example, including differences in demographic trends, high inequality and poverty rates, high shares of informal work, self-employment and agricultural labor. The seminar will focus on studies from across the world on STWTs. The discussion will pay attention to theoretical approaches, methodological issues, and statistical analyses. As the studies discussed are quantitative studies, a good knowledge in statistical methods is required (i.e. knowledge on linear regression models). Schließen
