SoSe 23: Media and Information Literacy

This course will be taught primarily in English and will offer opportunities for creative as well as field work.
We live in a time of rapid transformation within media and our entire communication system. Mis- and disinformation can spread just as quickly and with equal reach as breaking news or the opinions of pundits. Social Media and search engines have become integral parts of our everyday communication and information consumption. Legacy Media alone no longer determine what topics an increasingly active audience should think about or what is considered newsworthy. New gatekeepers and agenda setters have entered the stage and are challenging traditional opinion formation and public discourse. Thus questions arise: What are the consequences for social cohesion and democratic participation? What role does media and information literacy play? What are the skills and competences we need? Where and how will we acquire them?
Requirements: interest in group work/discussions and hands on research, firm in both English and German, willingness to complete reading assignments and conduct field work outside of class and present research results to potential external partners.
Attendance & Grading: Please, be present for the first session and continue to participate regularly. Evaluation will take place via oral presentations as well as written work allowing participants to practice critical thinking, apply research skills and be media and information literate Schließen
