Through a critical lens, students will analyze the strengths and weaknesses of US democracy, and consider the factors that contribute to the quality of democratic governance in the United States.
Topics covered in this seminar may include the historical development of democracy in the United States, the role of institutions and political actors in promoting or hindering democratic practices, and the impact of social and economic inequality on democratic governance. Students will also explore contemporary issues facing American democracy, such as the role of money in politics, the influence of media and technology, and the persistence of systemic racism.
