English Restoration Drama is one of the rare cases where literary history seems to have gone one step backwards by moving from a popular theatre open to everyone in the English Renaissance to the institutionalization of an agency of aristocratic entertainment after 1660. The research seminar will focus on Restoration comedy, and it will depart from the hypothesis that the laughter it stages is gendered in the sense that it divides the audience between men laughing at women and women laughing at men (cf. also the accompanying tutorial).
