SoSe 23: History of Racism - Histories of Racisms

Historical studies on racism have become increasingly diversified. During the postwar era, research on racism focused primarily on the emergence of the race-sciences in the late 18th century, on ideas of “Aryan” or “white supremacy” in the 19th century, or on the constitution of the three paradigmatic “ra-cial states” in the 20th century (the Southern United States during the “Jim-Crow”-era, Nazi-Germany, and the Apartheid-regime in South-Africa). However, debates about the persistence of racism and racial discrimination in present-day societies have changed our historical understanding, culminating in a temporal and spatial extension of the concept. As an effect the concept is applied to periods and re-gions outside of its original context. Therefore, prototypical approaches to “race” and “racism” have emerged, which do not presuppose clear conceptual boundaries, but allow gradations and grey areas to come into view. Building on this research, we will discuss if and how different concepts of “race” and “racism” can be applied to selected historical contexts. Schließen
