SoSe 23: Masculinities in Global History
Nina Verheyen
Kommentar
Global Historians have often written about „men“, but until recently they have rarely reflected upon gender as a social construction and they have rarely analyzed historical shifts in the construction of „masculinities“. In this class, we will first talk about basic approaches and narratives in gender history and in the history of masculinities. After that, we will read classics from global history and scrutinize how they deal with gender constructions. Specifically, we will analyze to what extent historians in the field of global history have reproduced a modern western dichotomy between “men” and “women” instead of historizising it. In the last section we will read important case studies that have tried to overcome this situation. In terms of region and time, we will mainly focus on the British Empire in the 19th century with a special focus on India, Subsaharan Africa and Western Europe. However, we will also touch upon other regions and students are welcome to make their own reading suggestions, too.
