SoSe 23: (In)Visibilities of violence- and coercion-based forms of domestic work

Sociological research on forms of coercion and violence-based work can be used to analyse and reconstruct societal forms of work and their interpretative models. This international research field deals with historical and contemporary forms of work that are determined by coercion and violence and/or overlap with them. These phenomena, which can be legally interpreted under the term 'forced labour', are not to be regarded as marginal phenomena, but as a structural component of (colonially) historically shaped gender and economic structures, and are to be empirically investigated.
Feminised activities in particular usually remain invisible. In this seminar, we use domestic work as a generic term for household-related work activities. We then speak of servitude in order to analytically grasp the hierarchy thus constituted between employer and domestic worker and the intersections between relatively free and violent practices. Under which conditions and in which specific contexts can labour practices in the household take on coercion-based forms?
As a worldwide phenomenon, these practices differ regionally and historically. We want to analyse the connections comparatively in Europe and Latin America. The seminar provides an opportunity to engage conceptually and from a sociology of knowledge perspective with forms of violence- and coercion-based labour. It also gives students the opportunity y to discuss current research on these forms of labour from a gender and inequality perspective, especially in the course of their own investigations.
