SoSe 23: Achievement
Nathaniel Jacob Baron-Schmitt
Kommentar
What sort of life should we want for ourselves? Some philosophers have thought that we should want a life full of pleasure, or full of virtue. We will focus on the idea that achievement is an essential part of a good life. We should want to lead a life where we set difficult goals and achieve them. But what exactly is achievement?
Does it have to be the reliable product of one’s own abilities? Or can achievement be the result of luck? And once we know what achievements are, we can ask: are achievements really valuable in themselves? Answering these questions turns out to be very philosophically fruitful, not only for ethics but also for epistemology.
A central question in epistemology is: why is it valuable to have knowledge? One answer, which we will explore, is that knowledge is a kind of achievement, and achievement is valuable. Schließen
