Ecological crises impact Majority World women and other marginalized identities
disproportionately. The course specifically looks into the role of Gender perspectives in socioecological
debates so far and the ways in which Feminist Ecologies contribute to solutions
towards Environmental Justice locally and globally. The purpose of this course is to lay basic
concepts that allow understanding power structures behind these inequalities. Intersectional
feminist thought is central insofar as it sheds light on the interlinkages between the dynamics
of patriarchal oppressions, rooted in sexism, racism, ableism, classism, anthropocentrism or
else.
The course begins with an overview of ecological paradigms from an intersectional feminist
perspective, taking the students from conversations about White male dominated
conservationist currents of the last century, to conceptualisations of Ecofeminisms carried by
Majority World women, and framings of Environmental Justice by and for marginalised
communities in the Minority World. The second part of the course introduces students to
feminist methodologies in order to further reflections about diversity and complex situations
in transnational contexts, and learn to work with situated feminist perspectives in their
trajectories within and beyond academia. Finally, the last part of the course focuses on
analysing the variety of feminist strategies of resistance in environmental justice struggles
globally.
