#Please note that this is a two-part project seminar: LV 15532 and 15532a MUST be taken together# What is the relationship between disruption and social change? Is protest, in order to be effective, reliant on maximum irritation and disruption? Or does the adoption of radical tactics, which can easily be discredited as violence, limit automatically limit protest potentials? At what point are civil society actors and their direct actions perceived as too radical by the public, thus constraining mobilization effects? The creative protests during the people's uprisings in Iran, the collective actions of anti-colonial and anti-racist groups such as Black Lives Matter, as well as the controversy surrounding the blockades of climate justice movement such as “Letzte Generation”, have brought these questions to the forefront of social movement research. The varying perceptions of radical politics worldwide challenge researchers in the fields of protest and conflict to ponder the conditions under which disruption and confrontation advance the goals of movements. Situated at the intersection of both disciplines, the project seminar aims to explore the conditions and impacts of radical direct actions, with an emphasis on the disruptive nature of protest and the interaction dynamics of protesters, authorities, and the wider public. By exploring key debates on the definition, justification, and measurement as well as the consequences of (non)violent resistance, students are familiarized with key tenets in the study of radical politics. In parallel, students are introduced to a range of empirical methods to study violence dynamics and the radicalization of social struggles. The course combines text work and presentations with more participatory formats. Over the course of the semester, participants will develop research designs for their own empirical research project, present them in dedicated colloquium sessions, receive and incorporate feedback, and become acquainted with an archetypical research process – from the identification of an empirical puzzle or theoretical gap, to the selection of an appropriate methodology to tackle it, to the formulation of a convincing argument in the shape of an paper that could be submitted to an academic journal.
