WiSe 23/24: [entfällt] Political Participation: Quantitative Analysis with R (1/2)

Philippe Joly

Kommentar

This seminar has two main goals: (1) to introduce students to the literature on political participation, and (2) to provide students with the methodological tools to conduct quantitative analysis on the topic. In terms of theory, we will discuss the concept of political participation, examine individual and contextual determinants of political activism, and explore recent debates such as shifting inequalities in political participation and changing repertoires of mobilization. Methodologically, the seminar will provide an introduction to the free statistical software R and present relevant quantitative methods for studying patterns of political participation. We will begin with exercises in exploratory data analysis before moving on to linear and logistic regression. Students will then have the opportunity to explore more advanced methods such as panel analysis or multilevel models. The seminar will draw on data from large survey projects, voter turnout databases, and protest event datasets. Prior knowledge of elementary statistics would be helpful, but is not required. Thorough reading and regular exercises are essential to keep up with the material presented in the seminar. The seminar will not be held in a PC pool. Participants are asked to bring their own laptops to the classroom. Schließen
