WiSe 23/24: Potentialities of Magical Realism in Arabic Literature

This course introduces magical realism as a literary mode that can be used to investigate and challenge the effects of colonization and the post-colonial aftermath within the Arab World, with a focus on Palestine. It frames magical realism as an active decolonial tool and invites thinking of Arabic literature as an agent of this process. It draws on studies made around magical realism and its streaks, such as realism, science fiction, Gothicism, and folktales. The course investigates the potentialities of magical realism in disrupting the colonial and post-colonial ‘realisms’ of the Arabic status quo. This includes splintering narrative voices, disrupting linear temporality, reversing death, imagining liberated futures, and performing acts of unity and solidarity that transcend the nationalistic and the ‘real.’ Ghassan Kanafani, Emil Habiby, Ghaleb Halasah, Ghada Samman, Ahmed Khalid Tawfiq, and Venus Khoury-Ghata are some authors whose works the course will investigate.
