WiSe 23/24: Photography in and of the MENA countries (19th-21th century)

Almost since the emergence of the camera, West Asia and North Africa have fascinated photographers. While initially only Western protagonists took pictures in the region, local photographers soon joined them. In this class, we will investigate the history of photography in the WANA countries by analyzing pictures of scientific expeditions, Mecca and Medina, missionary photography, ethnographic photography, photography commissioned by Sultan Abdulhamid II, the role of female photographers, photography in tourism and entertainment, the studio portrait, queer photography, photography and revolutions, and the role of artists in protecting photographic heritage at present. At the end of the class, participants should be able to 1) analyze images iconographically and historically, 2) apply interdisciplinary and intersectional perspectives to the analysis of images, 3) understand the technical development of photography, 4) gain an insight into the cultural and political history of the MENA countries through photography, 5) research and work with the online archives of institutions collecting historical photographs.
