After the Opium Wars and, notably, from 1860 onwards, a significant influx of Europeans and Americans arrived at the newly opened treaty ports such as Shanghai, Tianjin, and Guangzhou. This period saw the establishment of a diverse array of cultural, economic, and personal connections as states initiated diplomatic relations. Historically, the examination of these relations has predominantly focused on economic and political dimensions.
This course shifts its attention to German-Chinese relations, but instead of analysing economics and politics, we will ask ourselves, where and how we can discover our mutual and shared history in our historical memory, in museums, in archives and in art. Our central focus will revolve around the individuals involved in shaping our mutual history, encompassing Chinese residents in Germany, as well as Germans in Nanjing. Prominent figures, such as late Qing ambassadors in Berlin, John Rabe in Nanjing or famous Chinese revolutionaries based in Berlin during the 1920ies, serve as noteworthy examples. Furthermore, architecture, art, poetry, and diaries authored by Chinese travellers and sojourners in Germany will also be subject to scrutiny.
The overarching aim of this course is to furnish students not only with theoretical and methodological insights into the realm of intertwined history within the context of colonial and imperial history but also to provide a glimpse into the rich tapestry of international and cultural relations.
This class is a “pilot project” and will bring undergraduate students from the Department of History from Nanjing university and undergraduate students from the Chinese studies department of FU Berlin together in a class. Sessions are held on site in Nanjing, Berlin and hybrid from Berlin. Also students from the FMI in Germany are welcome to participate. Language of instruction is English.
