WiSe 23/24: Readings on origins of international intervention and human rights in the modern Middle East (1798-1925)

This course will examine the making of the paradigm of interventionism and humanitarianism in the Middle East over the long nineteenth century. We will focus on particularly significant crises and interventions from the French expedition into Egypt in 1798 to the establishment of British and French mandatory regimes after the First World War. We will examine how the so-called Great Powers negotiated among themselves, intimidated or convinced Ottoman and Qajar elites to acquiesce to their growing influence, and projected a disinterested image of Christian and humanitarian concern to their public. We will also study how Ottoman and Qajar elites sought to manage this new reality by coopting, resisting or succumbing to European pressures while reforming their polities. Finally, we will examine how subject communities sought to influence and participate in this new regime of imperial interventionism. Schließen
