Contents:
We present the fundamentals of collection management and scientific curation using the example of the Berlin Botanic Garden and its physical and digital collections. In our module, you will learn the theoretical basis for this and gain in-depth insights behind the scenes into how the individual collection types (living collection, herbarium, seed bank, DNA bank, etc.) are maintained and further developed. In addition to the two lecturers, colleagues from all collection-holding sections of the Berlin Botanic Garden will participate in order to give you an understanding of the functioning of a large, internationally networking institution. This gives you a practical understanding of the interaction between different professional groups and the qualifications they require. Despite the obvious focus on botanical topics, the knowledge acquired can be transferred to the entire professional field of collection management and curation and thus to other, also non-biological, collections. Collection and herbarium techniques depending on the organism group (taxonomy and biodiversity of plants, fungi and algae), aims and tasks of botanic gardens (seed banks, ex situ conservation), documentation, data management and information ressources (libraries, offline and online databases), preparation of identification keys and taxonomic monographs, science communication and visitor information (exhibition management, guided tours etc.).

Qualification goals:
The students possess up-to-date and structured specialist knowledge at a high level in the field of collection management and curation. They know the collection and information management of an international biological collection in order to record biodiversity and can confidently apply corresponding methods. They know methods of knowledge transfer and are able to create popular science information as well as to present and discuss data in a competent way. Schließen
