WiSe 23/24: The Economics of Migration

This course reviews and analyzes various aspects of migration economics, including migrant selection, drivers of migration, as well as financial, social, and political effects in the countries of origin and des-tination. The first part of the course reviews the key concepts of migration. The second part of the course discusses the empirical methods required to approach such research questions. Finally, the third part of the course combines theory and practice: we will discuss current economic papers in the European and the U.S. context to understand recent issues in the economics of migration and the research process in reality (list of papers to choose from will be provided). Requirements to pass and evaluation: Students should have introductory knowledge in economics and statistics. Students are expected to be present and active for at least 4/5 of all classes. The final grade will be the weighted sum of a paper presentation (30 percent) and a final paper at the end of the term (70 percent).
