WiSe 23/24: Facsism as a Transnational Movement

Grzegorz Rossolinski-Liebe

Kommentar

Subject: Fascism – similar to communism and democracy – made its appearance as a transnational movement, although its adherents understood themselves as ultranationalists bound to one country, which they wanted to protect from communists, democrats, and sometimes other fascist movements. Collaboration between fascists never led to a “Fascist international” but common values, interests and visions of a New Europe united fascists from small and large movements, even if obsession with violence and imperial fantasies caused conflicts between them. In this seminar, we will study the transnational nature of one of the most peculiar phenomena of the twentieth century and discuss the question of why its recent “comebacks” have alarmed intellectuals, journalists and political analysts around the globe. Program: In this seminar, we will read theoretical texts about various forms of fascism and discuss the question of fascist transnationalism, while paying attention to inter-fascist conflicts, obsession with violence, ultranationalism and racism, imperial fantasies, and numerous “comebacks” in recent years. Is this course suitable for you? This course is open to students from the Arts & Humanities, Cultural Studies, Social Sciences and Economics departments.
